In the Móricz Zsigmond Theatre, every visitor hungry for culture can find a play according to their taste, from tragedies to comedies, and performances for children.
A theatre built with community collaboration
The strollers played in a summer ‘arena’ built of planks for two decades, until the theatre-loving people of Nyíregyháza decided that they finally wanted to have a stone theatre. Led by royal notary public Gyula Somogyi, the people joined forces with the city’s leaders and, as a result, the awaited theatre had been constructed by 1894 according to the plans of Ignác Alpár. There was also a fly in the ointment, as the designer provided the city with the drawings of a theatre that was originally prepared for a city on the seaside, and for a few years they could not use it during the winter due to the absence of heating equipment.
Nyíregyháza has hosted one of the biggest free world music and cultural events of Central Europe for years. During the series of events, traditionally organised in late August and early September every year, the city bustles with people, and the squares and streets are filled with a carnival atmosphere. In addition to the events offered free of charge, the audience can see the best comedies in the theatre throughout the week.
